FUBE – National Semiconductor

Sightings

Original Fube.com research, corrected for typos and unfinished notes. The findings are unchanged.

Fubes is the plural of fube. A fube was a replacement for a vacuum tube, built with field-effect transistor technology. Plug a fube in where a tube had been and the circuit might work better — usually it did not. Engineers at National Semiconductor invented it in the 1960s. It never made any business, or any profit.

If you can confirm this, or add to it, the note is still open.

This note is part of the record behind a 4-letter .com for sale.

I wish I had my old copy of the National Semiconductor newsletter the “National Flash” ca 1972. Therein they announced the Fube, advising designers to call their rep and say “Gimme the poop on those Tubes.” The product never reached market and it was not April fool. The motto of the Flash was “Tempo es Peso.”
